Hey Dan.

It certainly seems to be an area where alot of businesses are trying to find
a common ground. The problem being that alot of this sort of activity hasn't
been done before, so there is no benchmark, no stats to compare. I'm really
excited about this area as an off-shoot of social media and really looking
forward to working with people in this area to understand more about it.

Thanks
Matt

definitely an interesting area Matt.. Social Business Design, as it has been coined, is something my company has been helping brands and agencies embrace for 12 months or so...from a commercial perspective people are much slower on the uptake here than in the US...conceptually, embracing social principles across a business works but the HUGE issues of governance and IT get in the way. It penetrates a business on such a fundamental level - particularly organisational culture and established hierarchies - that there's a lot of people who see it as as threat. And, even now, a lot of people just think facebook or wikipedia when they think of social media and struggle to contextualise it. For now, these are the main barriers to adoption.....anyway, just thought I'd share some reading that I've found interesting over the last year:

http://www.nevillehobson.com/2009/09/02/is-soci...
http://mashable.com/2010/01/11/social-media-int...
http://www.dachisgroup.com/social-business-design/
http://www.deloitte.co.uk/TMTPredictions/techno...
http://www.scribd.com/doc/22755275/Monkeys-with...

and also some blogs we've written on the subject:

http://www.dubstudios.com/online-communities/do...
http://www.dubstudios.com/business/social-media...
http://www.dubstudios.com/online-communities/us...

The graphics really make it clear that this is an old video but it's pretty amazing none the less - and it begs the question, why don't we see more VR games and features today? 3D video still feels like a bit of a gimick to me while having 3D, AR and VR games actually feels like progress in that industry.

There are some very cool products (i.e. PlayStation Move) that seem to be moving in this direction which is great news - I would much rather see a fully immersive environment I can control (games) than one I can't (films).

Great in theory, but I think spotify would probably be honest and say the
only drivers behind subs are not having ads, or for me having a mobile app.
Good shout though.

On point 2 (or maybe all of them), this won't be possible if people continue to subscribe for Premium access as it shuts advertisers out of the equation.

Obviously, not everyone is going to be a subscriber (especially if they already have a large collection of songs on itunes) but I'd suggest that the real route to success for Spotify is to continually improve their consumer offering to convert as many people to the Premium option as possible.

A steady £10 per month from everyone is better than a CPM ad model in my eyes
